Are you thinking of getting the true meaning of being in the African wilderness? Kidepo Valley NP offers its visitors just exactly that. Located in the country’s remote North-east Karamoja area, Kidepo is magnificent and ranks among Africa’s finest, unspoiled wildernesses. From Apoka in the heart of the park, a savannah landscape extends far beyond the protected area, towards the horizons outlined by distant mountain ranges.
While on a game drive, you get to encounter some of Kidepo’s residents that may not be found anywhere else such as bat-eared foxes, aardwolves, caracals, klipspringer, dik-dik and greater & lesser kudus in addition to its rich number of big 5 members.
The Narus Valley is the park’s prime game viewing location since most of the wildlife are concentrated there, revealing sweeping views of vast herds of buffalo with elephant, giraffe, waterbuck and zebra grazing alongside. Kidepo is a bird watcher's paradise too.
Watch out for species such as ostrich, egyptian vulture, pygmy falcon, Abyssinian scimitarbill, golden pipit, Hartlaub's turaco, Cisticola, Dusky-turtle Dove, Yellow and red spotted Barbet among others. Notwithstanding the abundance of wildlife, the encounter with the Karamojong or IK tribe in this place will leave you wanting to stay even longer.
Getting there: Road transfer or flight (if available) to Apoka Airstrip.
What to do: Game drives mainly in Narus Valley and sometimes in Kidepo valley, Nature walks, the Karamojong, IK community & cultural encounter, Mountain hiking to view the Morungole Mountain and Bird watching.
