Destination: A safari in Uganda offers travelers the opportunity to discover a land of pristine natural beauty. Described as “the Pearl of Africa” by Winston Churchill, Uganda offers some of Africa’s finest geographical and natural beauty, making it a tourist haven. Home to the greatest concentration of primates on the planet (including half the world’s mountain gorilla population), the source of the mighty River Nile and magnificent all year snow-capped peaks on Rwenzori Mountain, Uganda is an adventure enthusiasts’ paradise. Bird-watchers and big 5 animal lovers alike agree; this country is a true African gem waiting to be discovered.

The Package: This 7-Day Photography in Uganda is a highly strategic, fast-paced loop designed specifically for wildlife portraitists and landscape photographers. By focusing intensively on western Uganda’s premier biodiversity hotspots and utilizing a domestic flight on the final day, this route maximizes your time behind the lens during the “golden hours” while minimizing long road transits. You will capture three distinct visual styles: deep-forest primate portraits, expansive volcanic rift landscapes, and intimate, eye-level savannah and aquatic wildlife shots.

Let Home to Africa take you on this remarkable Photographic Expedition into the Pearl of Africa that the Fond Memory will stay with you for so long.

Expect: Deep-forest primate portraits, expansive volcanic rift landscapes, and intimate, eye-level savannah and aquatic wildlife shots.

Bragging Right: Close up encounter with chimpanzees, gorillas firsthand in their natural habitat, being in and touring Uganda – the Pearl of Africa.

Your 7-Day Itinerary

Day 1Transfer: Entebbe to Fort Portal Crater Lakes (Landscape Focus)

Visual Goal: Capture the dramatic, deep-blue volcanic waters framed by steep, emerald-green terraced hillsides, with the jagged peaks of the Rwenzori Mountains creating layer separation in the background.

Recommendation: Arrive a night prior to this day or arrive with an early morning flight such as those of 4 to 6am.

Following a pick up from either your hotel or straight from the airport, we shall embark on the transfer to the edge of Kibale National Park. The drive places you on the scenic, smooth tarmac highway heading west via Mityana and Mubende. Arrive in the clean, green town of Fort Portal for lunch. The sun is harsh and directly overhead right now—the worst time for landscapes. Use this time to check into your lodge, unpack your gear, and prep your camera sensors. At around 4pm, set out to the Kasenda Crater Field or the rims around Lake Kyaninga. The sun is starting to drop, casting longer, dramatic shadows across the topography. Position your tripod on an elevated crater rim. Look for viewpoints where you can compositionally frame a deep blue crater lake in the foreground, the rolling green tea plantations leading up the ridges, and the massive wall of the Rwenzori Mountains looming in the far background. Finally, return to the facility for dinner and overnight.

Accommodation: (Guereza Canopy Lodge or similar Midrange Level) | Meals: Lunch, Dinner | Transfer Time: Approx. 5-6 hours.

Day 2The Primate Portrait. Kibale Chimpanzee, Bigodi Wetland Monkeys.

Day 2 moves you from the grand, sweeping landscapes of the craters into the dark, moisture-rich understory of Kibale National Park and the dense canopy of the adjacent Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary. This day is entirely dedicated to capturing character-driven primate portraits, focusing on facial expressions, hand textures, and eye contact.

The Schedule: Arrive at the Kanyanchu Visitors Center by 07:30 AM for your briefing. You will enter the rainforest shortly after, tracking a habituated chimpanzee community during their most active morning hours. The rainforest canopy filters out up to 90% of ambient sunlight. You will be dealing with patchy, high-contrast light or deep, moody shadows. Set your lens wide open—ideally to f/2.8—to isolate the chimpanzee from the chaotic jungle branches and create a smooth backdrop. Keep your shutter speed at a minimum of 1/250s for resting chimps, and push it past 1/800s if they start moving, grooming quickly, or drumming on tree buttresses.

Composition Goal: Look for a chimpanzee resting on the ground against a massive, dark moss-covered fig tree root. Frame a tight head-and-shoulders portrait. The contrast between their dark, coarse black hair and their deeply expressive, human-like eyes makes for an incredibly powerful portrait.

The Schedule: At 02:30 PM, head to the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary. Unlike the deep forest interior, Bigodi is an open swamp network bordered by wild palms and low canopies, offering much better natural lighting. Bigodi is a primate paradise. You will have clean lines of sight to capture Grey-cheeked Mangabeys, Red Colobus, L’Hoest’s Monkeys, and the highly sought-after Great Blue Turaco.

Composition Goal: Capture the vivid color contrasts. Look for the distinct white whiskers and deep mahogany coat of a L’Hoest’s monkey, or frame the explosive blue, yellow, and red feathers of a Great Blue Turaco perched on a wild palm frond. We will finally return to the facility to freshen up, enjoy dinner and the overnight rest.

Accommodation: (Guereza Canopy Lodge or similar Midrange Level) | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Transfer Time: n/a.

Day 3The Rwenzori Descent & Queen’s Pavilion. Golden Hour Savannah (Landscape & Wildlife Focus).

Day 3 offers a dramatic visual shift as you drop down from the mist-shrouded foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains onto the sun-baked, golden savannah floor of the Great East African Rift Valley. This drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park is a masterclass in capturing vast environmental scale alongside clean, isolated wildlife portraits.

The Schedule: We shall check out of the facility by 07:30 AM to catch the low, angled morning sun painting the landscape. We will drive south for roughly 2 to 2.5 hours, crossing the equator line before reaching the northern entrance of the park. The primary landscape stop is the Queen’s Pavilion, situated on an elevated crater rim near the park’s main equator gate. From the pavilion’s high ridge, you are treated to a panoramic vista of the expansive Kasenyi Plains fading into the shimmering waters of Lake George. To your right, the perfectly round, grassy volcanic explosion craters punctuate the valley floor. From here, we shall head to the booked facility.

The Schedule: After a midday rest and lens cleanup, we shall head out into the Kasenyi Plains by 04:00 PM. The harsh equatorial sun is softening into warm, rich amber tones. This area is the primary breeding ground for the Ugandan Kob (a handsome, golden-coated antelope) and attracts predatory lions, massive herds of Cape Buffalo, and families of savannah elephants. After achieving our Visual Goal: (Clean, isolated portraits of Ugandan Kob or solitary Cape Buffaloes, or a massive bull elephant using a wide aperture to blur the golden savannah grass into smooth, creamy bokeh), we shall return to the facility to freshen up, enjoy dinner and later overnight.

Accommodation: (Elephant Hab Lodge or similar Midrange Level) | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Transfer Time: 2-3hours.

Day 4The Kasenyi Plains Sunrise and the Kazinga Channel Low-Angle Water (Wildlife Portrait Focus).

Day 4 combines two contrasting photographic environments: the golden, high-contrast grasslands of the Kasenyi Plains at sunrise and the smooth, low-angle aquatic perspectives of the Kazinga Channel in the afternoon. This is a day designed entirely around frame-filling, intimate wildlife portraits.

The Schedule: Pass through the park gates by 06:15 AM, well before the sun breaches the horizon. You want your camera settings dialled in while the landscape is still bathed in cool, deep-blue pre-dawn tones. Our focus is capturing active predators—specifically Queen Elizabeth’s famous lions and elusive leopards—as they wrap up their night hunts or patrol their territory before the daytime heat sets in. As the day heats up, we shall return to the facility for a repose, lunch and prep for the afternoon session.

The Schedule: Board your private boat at 02:30 PM. The afternoon sun draws an incredible density of wildlife down to the water’s edge to drink, bathe, and cool off. Kazinga also holds one of the highest concentrations of hippos in Africa. Request your skipper to safely idle near a pod. Wait for a territorial yawn. Capturing the massive, texturized teeth and spraying water droplets at eye level creates an incredibly powerful portrait. Look for massive Nile Crocodiles baking on the mud banks. The channel is an avian paradise. To capture an African Fish Eagle swooping down to strike a fish, you need explosive speed.

Upon realizing the day’s Visual Goal: (Tight, detailed headshots of elephants throwing mud, massive hippopotamus yawns revealing teeth, and texturized macro shots of resting Nile Crocodiles), we shall return to the facility to freshen up, enjoy dinner and later overnight.

Accommodation: (Elephant Hab Lodge or similar Midrange Level) | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Transfer Time: n/a.

Day 5Ishasha Tree-Limbing Lions to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest (Hybrid).

Day 5 is your ultimate hybrid shoot. You will start the morning looking out for apex predators lounging in the canopies of the southern Queen Elizabeth NP and end the day climbing into the high-altitude, prehistoric cloud forests of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. This day tests your ability to rapidly shift from high-contrast savannah light to moody, low-light mountain photography.

The Schedule: We shall depart northern Queen Elizabeth NP by 07:30 AM and drive south for about 2 hours to the remote Ishasha Sector. We want to be roaming the old fig tree circuits by 09:30 AM, just as the ground temperature begins to rise and pushes the lions up into the branches. Unlike typical ground-dwelling prides, Ishasha’s lions climb massive, sprawling Sycamore Fig trees. This gives you a rare opportunity to capture big cat profiles completely free from distracting ground scrub, framed instead by deep green leaves and textured bark.

The Schedule: By 01:00 PM, we wrap up the Ishasha shoot and begin the steep, winding drive upward into the Kigezi Highlands toward Bwindi. As we climb, the landscape transforms from flat acacia plains into tightly terraced, vertical green mountains. By 04:30 PM, we will reach the boundaries of Bwindi. The air cools down instantly, and heavy clouds and mist begin to roll through the deep valleys and ancient ridges. Pull over at elevated roadside viewpoints overlooking the forest canopy. The endless ridges of Bwindi stretch out like green waves. Use your 24-70mm lens or a wide prime to capture this immense scale.

Visual Goal: A composition of a lion framed by dark green leaves, followed by late-afternoon landscape shots of Bwindi’s ancient, cloud-covered forest ridges.

Accommodation: (Haven Lodge Buhoma or similar Midrange Level) | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Transfer Time: Approx. 4-5 hours.

Day 6Bwindi Mountain Gorilla Trekking (The Ultimate Primate Portrait).

Today is the crown jewel of our photographic expedition. Mountain gorillas share roughly 98% of our DNA, and looking at them through a viewfinder is a profoundly emotional experience. The primary goal today is to capture character-driven, highly expressive portraits—focusing on their deep, amber eyes, leathery hands, and striking facial features—while separating them from the chaotic jungle backdrop.

The Schedule: 07:30 AM – Gathering at the Visitors’ Information Center: Enjoy a hearty, early breakfast served at your forest lodge and then, move to the Visitors’ Information Center. After a briefing from experienced park rangers, begin your trek through the ancient rainforest in search of a family of endangered mountain gorillas. The hike may be challenging at times, but every step becomes worthwhile when you finally come face to face with these gentle giants in their natural habitat. Once you locate the family, your official one-hour photo window begins. The jungle floor is dark, and the foliage is thick, requiring immediate technical adjustments. Shoot completely wide open at f/2.8 (or f/1.8 if using a prime lens). This does two things: it lets the maximum amount of light hit your sensor, and it blows out the distracting, messy vines into a beautifully smooth, blurred background, making your subject pop.

Upon exiting the forest, your lead ranger will present you with official, personalized Gorilla Trekking Certificates—a beautiful keepsake to frame in your home. Return to your lodge to wash off the mountain mud and take rest – recovering from the strenuous trek. *Optional (extra cost): In rare case where you have managed to return with some time to spare, you may consider; visiting the Pangolin Rescue Center. Because pangolins are strictly protected and highly sensitive, this afternoon excursion adds an incredibly rare, texturized subject to your wildlife portrait portfolio.

Accommodation: (Haven Lodge Buhoma or similar Midrange Level) | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Transfer Time: n/a.

Day 7Bwindi Mist Sunrises & The abstract, low-altitude aerial landscapes.

Utilizing a domestic fly-in safari on Day 7 alters your creative options. By skipping the grueling 8-to-10-hour drive from Bwindi back to Entebbe, you gain access to two distinct, world-class photographic opportunities: capturing the iconic Bwindi mist sunrises at eye-level from the mountain ridges, and shooting abstract, low-altitude aerial landscapes of the Ugandan countryside during your bush flight.

The Schedule: Set your alarm for 05:45 AM. You want to be positioned at an elevated viewpoint or on your lodge’s balcony by 06:15 AM, well before the sun breaks over the Kigezi Highlands. As the cold night air meets the warm, moisture-rich canopy of the ancient rainforest, dense white mist gets trapped in the valleys, creating a shifting ocean of clouds below the mountain peaks. This is an Atmospheric Phenomenon never to miss. Wrap up your morning shoot, eat breakfast, and take the scenic 1-to-1.5-hour drive down the mountain slopes to the Kihihi Airstrip. Depending on availability, you will depart Kihihi with the 09:45 AM or 11:45 AM flight, touching down at Entebbe International Airport roughly 60 to 75 minutes later.

You will be flying in a small, single-engine turboprop aircraft (typically a Cessna Caravan). These planes fly at relatively low altitudes (usually between 8,000 and 12,000 feet), offering a stunning birds-eye view of the changing topography. As you soar over the countryside, look down at the geometric patterns of the terraced tea estates, the winding red-dirt roads cutting through villages, and the sudden transition back to the sprawling blue waters and green islands of Lake Victoria as you descend into Entebbe. Because the aircraft is moving quickly, you need a very fast shutter speed to guarantee sharp details.

Upon landing back in Entebbe, your 7-day photographic expedition concludes with a highly diverse, professional-grade portfolio featuring: Crater Landscapes, Jungle Primates, Savannah Wildlife, Water-Level Perspectives, Aerial Topography. You can connect directly to your international outbound flight. *(Extra cost): If you have a late-evening/night flight, you can let us know so that we can recommend a fantastic lakeside restaurant or day-room hotel where you can relax, backing up your memory cards and charging your laptop before the long journey home.

Accommodation: Recommended on request | Meals: Breakfast | Transfer Time: Approx. 3 hours.

The roads (route):

> Roads in Uganda offer breathtaking scenic journeys ranging from the smooth Entebbe Expressway to the dramatic, winding mountain passes of the southwest. While paved highways are in excellent condition, part of this journey will involve traversing some rural dirt road networks that may present a bouncy, uncomfortable ride at some points. This tour will therefore use a well-maintained safari land-cruiser to better navigate the park tracks and interior dirt roads.

Permits:
> Limited permit slots are made available per day per trekking sector and sold on a first come first serve basis by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. At times (most especially when decision to confirm delays to come through), it is possible to miss out because the slots have sold out. However, we always do our very best to ensure this important element of your tour is secured. Sometimes, this will involve tweaking the itinerary slightly to align it with the possible/available trekking date. At times, this simply means switching the sector without changing the date. In all efforts, we ensure the timeframe of the tour is not altered.
