Day 3Birding Mabira Forest (half day) and off to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary.

Habitat: Primary moist semi-deciduous tropical rainforest transitioning into dry Acacia-Combretum savannah.

The Schedule: A quick breakfast at the Forest Lodge and then, we are off to spend the first half of the day birding the extensive trail system of Mabira Forest, focusing on forest canopy dwellers and undergrowth skulkers. After an early lunch, we will depart Mabira and drive north towards the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, arriving for a dusk birding walk.

Day 4Full-Day Birding Ziwa Sanctuary (Overnight - Masindi).

Habitat: Wooded savannah, dry acacia woodlands, seasonal marshes, and rocky outcroppings.

The Schedule: Take up a breakfast pack, and we are off to board a traditional dugout canoe to explore the Lugogo Wetland, a 10-kilometer papyrus swamp network inside the sanctuary. This early launch is vital for catching the prehistoric Shoebill Stork while it is actively fishing before the midday heat sets in. From the swamp, we shall switch to a guided foot trail winding through the sanctuary’s 70-square-kilometer mix of Acacia woodlands and open savannah bushes. At 1 PM, we will be off for a hot lunch break at the open-air restaurant of Amuka Safari Lodge inside the reserve. At around 3 or 3:30 PM we will be heading out on a foot patrol combining white rhino tracking with dedicated bush birding. Finally, we will hop back into the vehicle for a scenic drive to the historic town of Masindi for an overnight stay, placing us closer to the royal miles tomorrow.

Habitat: Pristine, high-canopy tropical rainforest with massive mahogany trees and a clear understory.

The Schedule: We will arrive at the Busingiro Ecotourism Site entry gate precisely at dawn to catch the morning chorus. Because the trail is wide and flat, we can stroll quietly while scanning the distinct forest layers, from the leaf litter up to the high mahogany canopy. We will spend a spectacular full day walking the historic “Royal Mile” in the Budongo Forest Reserve, renowned as one of Africa’s premier forest birding tracks. Later, we will enter Murchison Falls National Park, where the habitat shifts completely. Switch your optical gear from forest settings to wide-angle or high-zoom savannah tracking.

Day 6Nile Delta Birding and Afternoon Savannah Birding (Murchison Falls).

Habitat: Papyrus-fringed river delta, open river water, Borassus palm savannah, and dry whistling-thorn grasslands.

The Schedule: We will grab our breakfast pack and head off to board a specialized, low-profile vessel at the Paraa jetty. Unlike the standard boat trip that goes upriver to the base of the waterfall, the Nile Delta cruise sails 20 kilometers downriver to the point where the Victoria Nile opens into Lake Albert. The slow-moving waters and massive papyrus banks create prime feeding grounds for rare waterbirds. We will return for lunch at the lodge before switching to a slow game drive across the Buligi open grasslands and Borassus palm landscapes in the northern sector. We will focus our attention on the low bushes, open savannah floor, and dead tree branches where raptors and rollers sit waiting to hunt.

Habitat: Open savannah, riverine thickets, and dry grassy plains along the western escarpment of the Albertine Rift.

The Schedule: We will complete a quick dawn drive across the northern sector tracks before exiting the park. The first hours of light are the best time to look for ground-dwelling hunters moving through the short grasses before it gets hot. We will exit the park and drive south through the Bugungu Gate, climbing the winding roads of the Albertine Rift Valley Escarpment. Look out for cliff-dwelling and scrub-loving species along the rocky edges, including the Mocking Cliff-Chat, Foxy Cisticola, and White-rumped Swift. Arrive at the remote Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve and head straight out on a guided nature walk or open-vehicle drive along the escarpment trails. Kabwoya hosts over 460 bird species, acting as a critical ecological corridor between Murchison Falls and the southern forests.

Target Species: Black-billed Barbet, Swallow-tailed Bee-eater, Chestnut-crowned Sparrow-Weaver, Black-headed Lapwing, Double-toothed Barbet, Red-throated Bee-eater, Blue-naped Mousebird.

Day 9Green-breasted Pitta Quest. Chimpanzee Tracking and The Bigodi.

Habitat: Medium-altitude moist evergreen rainforest, mature canopy trees, dense secondary growth forest edges, and a community-managed papyrus swamp and boardwalk system.

The Schedule: Wake up before dawn for a highly focused, silent trek into the forest interior to catch the display of the rare Green-breasted Pitta. Once the sun rises, the focus will shift to joining a tracking group to locate a community of wild Chimpanzees, spending the remainder of the morning observing them as they feed in the canopy and socialize on the forest floor. Keep the binoculars ready for canopy birds.  We will return for lunch and a little repose before heading down to the Bigodi wetland. Navigating via wooden boardwalks and dirt paths around the swamp edge, we will seek out colorful turacos and various forest-edge birds, while encountering multiple species of diurnal primates like the Red Colobus and Grey-cheeked Mangabey.

Target Species: Green-breasted Pitta, African Pitta (rare migrant), Western Bronze-naped Pigeon, White-naped Pigeon, Abyssinian Ground-Thrush, Black-eared Ground-Thrush, and Scaly-breasted Illadopsis, Great Blue Turaco, White-spotted Flufftail, Papyrus Gonolek, Western Nicator, Yellow-spotted Barbet, Brown-throated Wattle-eye.

Habitat: Deep montane lakeshores transitioning to dry, rolling acacia savannah, rocky hillsides, and a small pocket of closed-canopy forest.

The Schedule: A quick breakfast and we will be leaving the volcanic highlands behind and drive east toward Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda’s smallest savannah park. Upon arrival, we will take a guided walk through the localized, shady canopy of Rubanga Forest. Unlike the expansive montane forests of Bwindi or Mgahinga, Rubanga is a small, compact pocket of forest. Because it is surrounded by dry savannah, it acts as an ecological island, drawing in specialized forest birds that cannot survive in the open grasslands. In other words, this forest patch provides a unique refuge for forest species within a broader savannah landscape.

Target Species: Red-faced Barbet, Long-tailed Cuckoo, Green-backed Woodpecker, Greater Honeyguide, Narina Trogon, White-winged Tit, and Lead-colored Flycatcher, Green Pigeon, Grey-backed Cameroptera, Red-headed Bluebill and the loud Harrier Hawk.

After a rewarding morning, we will begin the drive back toward Kampala, stopping at the Equator crossing for photos and souvenirs, before arriving at Entebbe International Airport for a flight out (recommended for 19:00hr or later). Thank you for travelling with us. The End. Thank you for choosing and travelling with us (Home to Africa).

Target Species: African Finfoot, Red-faced Barbet, Rufous-bellied Heron, Papyrus Yellow Warbler, Tabora Cisticola, and Coqui Francolins, Red-headed Lovebird, and Bare-faced Go-away-bird.

Accommodation: Recommended on request | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch | Transfer Time: Approx. 4 hours.
