Your 10-Day Itinerary

Day 1Arrival in Entebbe – Uganda and acclimatization.

This Day 1 is structurally designed around acclimatization—not just for your body to adjust to the equatorial climate, but to calibrate your camera sensors to the intense, high-contrast light of the equator. So, you can arrive on a midmorning or early afternoon flight. The assigned Professional Driver-guide will pick you upon arrival.

After checking into your lakeside hotel and clearing your lenses of transit condensation, your opening afternoon shoot introduces the first visual style of your portfolio: high-contrast, rich avian portraiture and dramatic water-skies. Take a few test frames in the open air to ensure your lenses have fully adjusted from the air-conditioned aircraft cabins to Entebbe’s warm, humid atmosphere.

If time allows: Head down to the historic Entebbe Botanical Gardens. This lush, lakeside canopy offers an incredible concentration of birdlife, giving you clear lines of sight without the immediate tracking strain of the deep western jungles. While at the lake, position your tripod on the edge of a quiet beach facing west over the expansive waters of Lake Victoria. Watch the sky transition into fiery gradients of deep orange, crimson, and violet. Look for local wooden fishing canoes cutting through the water to use as a foreground anchor.

Accommodation: (2 Friends Hotel Entebbe or Midrange of similar Level) | Meals: Dinner | Transfer time: Approx. 20 Minutes.

Day 2The Prehistoric Swamp Stalk – Mabamba Wetland & Northward Transit.

Day 2 introduces your first specialized wildlife shoot: tracking Africa’s most iconic, prehistoric-looking avian target, the Shoebill Stork. This morning session requires shooting from a low, water-level perspective in a moving canoe. Afterward, you will pack up your gear for a 4-hour road journey north into the dry savannah woodlands of the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary.

The schedule: 06:30 AM – Boarding the Canoe at Mabamba. Arrive early at the swamp edge to catch the cool, misty morning light. You will board a narrow, wooden motorized canoe guided by a local community bird specialist. The engine is used only for transit; once you enter the narrow papyrus channels, your guide will cut the motor and use a wooden pole to silently glide forward. The Shoebill is a solitary ambush predator that stands completely motionless for hours, waiting to strike lungfish in the shallow muddy channels. Your guide will maneuver the boat quietly into the dense papyrus walls to get you a clear line of sight.

Crouch down as low as possible on the floor of the wooden canoe to bring your lens just a couple of feet above the water line. This eye-level perspective makes the 4-foot-tall stork look incredibly imposing and creates an intense, powerful connection with its piercing yellow eyes.

The schedule: 10:30 or 11:00 AM – Hit the Road to Ziwa. We begin the 4-hour drive north via the smooth Kampala-Gulu highway. As we leave the lush Lake Victoria basin behind, the landscape rapidly flattens into dry, open savannah woodlands and terminalia thickets. We arrive at Ziwa around 3pm, check into the booked facility, and give your camera bodies a thorough cleaning with an air blower to remove any dust kicked up during the road transit. Keep your batteries on chargers to ensure you are fully prepped for tomorrow morning’s on-foot tracking session with the Southern White Rhinos.

Accommodation: (Amuka Lodge or similar Midrange Level) | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Transfer Time: Approx. 4 hours.

Day 3Ziwa Rhino Tracking – Eye-Level Giants & Heading to Murchison Falls (Wildlife Portrait Focus).

This day offers an exhilarating creative shift: stepping entirely outside of the vehicle frame to track Southern White Rhinos on foot. This unconfined environment allows you to capture raw, low-angle mammal portraits without any glass or metal bars blocking your frame. In the afternoon, you will head north to cross into the dramatic palm-savannahs of Murchison Falls National Park.

The schedule: 07:00 AM – We meet an armed Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) ranger at the sanctuary headquarters. Move out slowly in a single-file line behind your ranger, staying downwind so the rhinos do not catch your scent. The early morning air is cool, meaning the rhinos will be active, grazing out in open savannah clearings rather than resting in dense, shaded thickets. Crouch low into the bush to look slightly upward at a massive Southern White Rhino grazing. The low angle emphasizes their monumental scale. Tightly frame the texture of their horn and battle-scarred leather skin, using a shallow depth of field to completely melt away the chaotic thorny bushes behind them.

The schedule: 10:30 or 11:00 AM – We begin the 3-hour drive towards Murchison Falls National Park. As you approach the park via the southern gate, the road winds through the lush Kaniyo Pabidi forest before dropping dramatically down the Albertine Rift Valley escarpment. Cross the Victoria Nile to reach your lodge on the northern bank—the main gateway to the park’s premier wildlife tracks. 04:00 PM – We take a relaxed late-afternoon drive along the Albert Delta tracks. Use this time to scout out iconic Borassus Palm trees and solitary ridges to map out your lighting lines for tomorrow’s headline sunrise shoot.

Accommodation: (Pakuba Safari Lodge or similar Midrange Level) | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Transfer Time: Approx. 3-4 hours.

Day 4Borassus Palm Sunrises & The Devil’s Cauldron Cruise (Landscape, Wildlife Portrait Focus).

Day 4 combines two of East Africa’s most visually dramatic environments. You will spend the morning capturing the iconic palm-studded savannahs of the northern delta during the golden hour, before boarding a private river vessel in the afternoon to shoot large game from a low, water-level perspective as you head toward the base of the world’s most powerful waterfall.

06:15 AM – We set out before the sun breaks the horizon. The northern sector of Murchison Falls is a vast savannah punctuated by thousands of towering, fan-shaped Borassus Palm trees, creating a distinct silhouette landscape found nowhere else in southwestern Uganda. We will be tracking down active lions, leopards, and large herds of Rothschild’s Giraffes as they move across the open delta tracks before the midday heat forces them into hiding. As the sun rises, position a lone giraffe or a herd of Jackson’s Hartebeests directly beneath a dramatic Borassus palm tree, framing them against the pink and gold sky.

02:00 PM – We depart from the Paraa jetty heading upstream toward Murchison Falls. Opting for a private, low-set boat allows you to get your lens down just one to two feet above the water line, providing an incredibly intimate perspective on the animals congregating along the riverbanks. Tightly frame massive Nile Crocodiles baking on the sandbanks, families of elephants bathing and throwing red clay over their backs, and endless pods of grunting hippos. Finally, we shall head back to the lodge to freshen up, enjoy dinner and overnight.

Accommodation: (Pakuba Safari Lodge or similar Midrange Level) | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Transfer Time: n/a.

Day 5Final Delta Stalk, The Top of the Falls & Albertine Rift Transit.

This Day 5 marks our final morning in the northern savannahs, beginning with a sunrise game drive across the Albert Delta tracks. You will then stand directly over the roaring crest of Murchison Falls to capture its immense hydraulic scale from above, before embarking on a scenic 6-to-7-hour road journey south through the sweeping landscapes of the Albertine Rift Valley to reach the edge of the Kibale Forest.

The Schedule: 06:15 AM – We will set out onto the delta tracks for one final morning session. The focus here is capturing active avian or mammal predators—such as an elusive leopard returning to a thick thicket or a Lesser Kestrel hunting from a branch—before the intense equatorial heat flattens the light.

Standing at the Top of Murchison Falls. Drive to the southern bank and walk out onto the rock escarpments directly overlooking the Top of the Falls. Here, the entire Victoria Nile compresses from a 50-metre-wide river into a tiny, jagged 7-metre gap before plunging 45 metres into the canyon below. 10:30 AM – Pack your gear securely into dust-proof bags and hit the road heading south. The drive winds through the spectacular countryside of the Albertine Rift, passing through bustling market towns, and sprawling hand-farmed hillsides.

As we approach Fort Portal, the dry savannah brush completely disappears, replaced by a striking landscape of undulating, vibrant green tea plantations that blanket the rolling hills like an emerald carpet. Pull over safely at an elevated ridge overlooking the tea estates. Use a mid-range telephoto lens (70-200mm) to compress the landscape, capturing the rows of green tea bushes catching the low afternoon side-lighting, with the distant, moody foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains establishing the background layer. Check into your lodge. The air cools down rapidly here, and the sounds of the savannah are replaced by the deep hum of the tropical rainforest canopy.

Accommodation: (Guereza Canopy Lodge or similar Midrange Level) | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Transfer Time: Approx. 6-7 hours.

Day 6The Primate Portrait. Golden Hour Savannah (Landscape & Wildlife).

Day 6 combines a morning primate photography masterclass in the jungle with an evening safari focused on capturing wildlife silhouettes during the golden hour. The itinerary features specialized techniques for low-light primate portraits and high-impact savannah shots using 70-200mm and 100-400mm+ lenses.

The Schedule: Arrive at the Kanyanchu Visitors Center by 07:30 AM for your briefing. You will enter the rainforest shortly after, tracking a habituated chimpanzee community during their most active morning hours. The rainforest canopy filters out up to 90% of ambient sunlight. You will be dealing with patchy, high-contrast light or deep, moody shadows. Set your lens wide open—ideally to f/2.8—to isolate the chimpanzee from the chaotic jungle branches and create a smooth backdrop. Keep your shutter speed at a minimum of 1/250s for resting chimps, and push it past 1/800s if they start moving, grooming quickly, or drumming on tree buttresses.

Composition Goal: Look for a chimpanzee resting on the ground against a massive, dark moss-covered fig tree root. Frame a tight head-and-shoulders portrait. The contrast between their dark, coarse black hair and their deeply expressive, human-like eyes makes for an incredibly powerful portrait. Return for lunch and transfer.

The Schedule: Return to the lodge for a fresh meal and a chance to recharge camera batteries. From lunch, board vehicle and we embark on a transfer to Queen. This drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park is a masterclass in capturing vast environmental scale alongside clean, isolated wildlife portraits. We will arrive at the facility, check in and prep for the Golden Hour Savannah.

04:00 PM: Predator & Big Game Drive plus the Golden Hour: Board your 4×4 safari vehicle and head out into the wide-open savannah. Intentionally underexpose your shot. Place your wildlife subject directly between your lens and the setting sun to highlight sharp, black outlines. Frame the animal small in the lower third of the image. Leave the upper two-thirds open to showcase the vast, fiery African sky. Shoot from the lowest possible vantage point in the vehicle. This makes elephants, lions, or giraffes look massive, heroic, and powerful against the horizon. Toast a successful day of shooting with drinks and appetizers directly in the bush as twilight sets in.

Accommodation: (Elephant Hab Lodge or similar Midrange Level) | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Transfer Time: 2-3hours.

Day 7The Kasenyi Plains Sunrise and the Kazinga Channel Low-Angle Water (Wildlife Portrait Focus).

Day 7 combines two contrasting photographic environments: the golden, high-contrast grasslands of the Kasenyi Plains at sunrise and the smooth, low-angle aquatic perspectives of the Kazinga Channel in the afternoon. This is a day designed entirely around frame-filling, intimate wildlife portraits.

The Schedule: Pass through the park gates by 06:15 AM, well before the sun breaches the horizon. You want your camera settings dialled in while the landscape is still bathed in cool, deep-blue pre-dawn tones. Our focus is capturing active predators—specifically Queen Elizabeth’s famous lions and elusive leopards—as they wrap up their night hunts or patrol their territory before the daytime heat sets in. As the day heats up, we shall return to the facility for a repose, lunch and prep for the afternoon session.

The Schedule: Board your private boat at 02:30 PM. The afternoon sun draws an incredible density of wildlife down to the water’s edge to drink, bathe, and cool off. Kazinga also holds one of the highest concentrations of hippos in Africa. Request your skipper to safely idle near a pod. Wait for a territorial yawn. Capturing the massive, texturized teeth and spraying water droplets at eye level creates an incredibly powerful portrait. Look for massive Nile Crocodiles baking on the mud banks. The channel is an avian paradise. To capture an African Fish Eagle swooping down to strike a fish, you need explosive speed.

Upon realizing the day’s Visual Goal: (Tight, detailed headshots of elephants throwing mud, massive hippopotamus yawns revealing teeth, and texturized macro shots of resting Nile Crocodiles), we shall return to the facility to freshen up, enjoy dinner and later overnight.

Accommodation: (Elephant Hab Lodge or similar Midrange Level) | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Transfer Time: n/a.

Day 8Ishasha Tree-Limbing Lions to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest (Hybrid).

Day 8 is your ultimate hybrid shoot. You will start the morning looking out for apex predators lounging in the canopies of the southern Queen Elizabeth NP and end the day climbing into the high-altitude, prehistoric cloud forests of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. This day tests your ability to rapidly shift from high-contrast savannah light to moody, low-light mountain photography.

The Schedule: We shall depart northern Queen Elizabeth NP by 07:30 AM and drive south for about 2 hours to the remote Ishasha Sector. We want to be roaming the old fig tree circuits by 09:30 AM, just as the ground temperature begins to rise and pushes the lions up into the branches. Unlike typical ground-dwelling prides, Ishasha’s lions climb massive, sprawling Sycamore Fig trees. This gives you a rare opportunity to capture big cat profiles completely free from distracting ground scrub, framed instead by deep green leaves and textured bark.

The Schedule: By 01:00 PM, we wrap up the Ishasha shoot and begin the steep, winding drive upward into the Kigezi Highlands toward Bwindi. As we climb, the landscape transforms from flat acacia plains into tightly terraced, vertical green mountains. By 04:30 PM, we will reach the boundaries of Bwindi. The air cools down instantly, and heavy clouds and mist begin to roll through the deep valleys and ancient ridges. Pull over at elevated roadside viewpoints overlooking the forest canopy. The endless ridges of Bwindi stretch out like green waves. Use your 24-70mm lens or a wide prime to capture this immense scale.

Visual Goal: A composition of a lion framed by dark green leaves, followed by late-afternoon landscape shots of Bwindi’s ancient, cloud-covered forest ridges.

Accommodation: (Haven Lodge Buhoma or similar Midrange Level) | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Transfer Time: Approx. 4-5 hours.

Day 9Bwindi Mountain Gorilla Trekking (The Ultimate Primate Portrait).

Today is the crown jewel of our photographic expedition. Mountain gorillas share roughly 98% of our DNA, and looking at them through a viewfinder is a profoundly emotional experience. The primary goal today is to capture character-driven, highly expressive portraits—focusing on their deep, amber eyes, leathery hands, and striking facial features—while separating them from the chaotic jungle backdrop.

The Schedule: 07:30 AM – Gathering at the Visitors’ Information Center: Enjoy a hearty, early breakfast served at your forest lodge and then, move to the Visitors’ Information Center. After a briefing from experienced park rangers, begin your trek through the ancient rainforest in search of a family of endangered mountain gorillas. The hike may be challenging at times, but every step becomes worthwhile when you finally come face to face with these gentle giants in their natural habitat. Once you locate the family, your official one-hour photo window begins. The jungle floor is dark, and the foliage is thick, requiring immediate technical adjustments. Shoot completely wide open at f/2.8 (or f/1.8 if using a prime lens). This does two things: it lets the maximum amount of light hit your sensor, and it blows out the distracting, messy vines into a beautifully smooth, blurred background, making your subject pop.

Upon exiting the forest, your lead ranger will present you with official, personalized Gorilla Trekking Certificates—a beautiful keepsake to frame in your home. Return to your lodge to wash off the mountain mud and take rest – recovering from the strenuous trek. *Optional (extra cost): In rare case where you have managed to return with some time to spare, you may consider; visiting the Pangolin Rescue Center. Because pangolins are strictly protected and highly sensitive, this afternoon excursion adds an incredibly rare, texturized subject to your wildlife portrait portfolio.

Accommodation: (Haven Lodge Buhoma or similar Midrange Level) | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Transfer Time: n/a.

Day 10Bwindi Mist Sunrises & The abstract, low-altitude aerial landscapes.

Utilizing a domestic fly-in safari on Day 10 alters your creative options. By skipping the grueling 8-to-10-hour drive from Bwindi back to Entebbe, you gain access to two distinct, world-class photographic opportunities: capturing the iconic Bwindi mist sunrises at eye-level from the mountain ridges, and shooting abstract, low-altitude aerial landscapes of the Ugandan countryside during your bush flight.

The Schedule: Set your alarm for 05:45 AM. You want to be positioned at an elevated viewpoint or on your lodge’s balcony by 06:15 AM, well before the sun breaks over the Kigezi Highlands. As the cold night air meets the warm, moisture-rich canopy of the ancient rainforest, dense white mist gets trapped in the valleys, creating a shifting ocean of clouds below the mountain peaks. This is an Atmospheric Phenomenon never to miss. Wrap up your morning shoot, eat breakfast, and take the scenic 1-to-1.5-hour drive down the mountain slopes to the Kihihi Airstrip. Depending on availability, you will depart Kihihi with the 09:45 AM or 11:45 AM flight, touching down at Entebbe International Airport roughly 60 to 75 minutes later.

You will be flying in a small, single-engine turboprop aircraft (typically a Cessna Caravan). These planes fly at relatively low altitudes (usually between 8,000 and 12,000 feet), offering a stunning birds-eye view of the changing topography. As you soar over the countryside, look down at the geometric patterns of the terraced tea estates, the winding red-dirt roads cutting through villages, and the sudden transition back to the sprawling blue waters and green islands of Lake Victoria as you descend into Entebbe. Because the aircraft is moving quickly, you need a very fast shutter speed to guarantee sharp details.

Upon landing back in Entebbe, your 7-day photographic expedition concludes with a highly diverse, professional-grade portfolio featuring: Crater Landscapes, Jungle Primates, Savannah Wildlife, Water-Level Perspectives, Aerial Topography. You can connect directly to your international outbound flight. *(Extra cost): If you have a late-evening/night flight, you can let us know so that we can recommend a fantastic lakeside restaurant or day-room hotel where you can relax, backing up your memory cards and charging your laptop before the long journey home.

Accommodation: Recommended on request | Meals: Breakfast | Transfer Time: Approx. 3 hours.

Additional Info

Technical Guide:

> Check a separate PDF file attachment (10-day Uganda Photography Tour – Primates and Big Game).

The roads (route):

> Roads in Uganda offer breathtaking scenic journeys ranging from the smooth Entebbe Expressway to the dramatic, winding mountain passes of the southwest. While paved highways are in excellent condition, part of this journey will involve traversing some rural dirt road networks that may present a bouncy, uncomfortable ride at some points. This tour will therefore use a well-maintained safari land-cruiser to better navigate the park tracks and interior dirt roads.

Permits:
> Limited permit slots are made available per day per trekking sector and sold on a first come first serve basis by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. At times (most especially when decision to confirm delays to come through), it is possible to miss out because the slots have sold out. However, we always do our very best to ensure this important element of your tour is secured. Sometimes, this will involve tweaking the itinerary slightly to align it with the possible/available trekking date. At times, this simply means switching the sector without changing the date. In all efforts, we ensure the timeframe of the tour is not altered.

Booking Confirmation:
> The following are required:
* Permit fees (i.e. gorilla, chimp, golden monkey): 100% upfront payment.
* 30% of the resulting value after deducting the permit fees’ value.
* Last-minute booking (i.e., less than a month to the start date): 100% upfront payment.
> Final payment:
* All outstanding balances should be cleared (at the latest) 2 weeks before the start of the booked tour/safari.
