Relatively warm and low-lying, Akagera National Park comprises savannah, acaccia woodlands, patches of thick forest, wetland and a dozen lakes. Akagera is a true success story of conservation effort. With a family of lions from South Africa settled and breeding successfully and eastern black rhinos reintroduced, the park boasts of big 5 sighting. Encounter buffalos, elephants, zebra, giraffe, antelope species like impala, bushbuck and an incredible 490 bird species plus much more.
A boat trip on Lake Ihema is also a highlight of any visit to Akagera, with its large pods of hippos, Nile crocodiles and abundant water birds. This a big game viewers’ zone. Pre-dominantly an East African savannah park.
Getting there: Road transfer mainly.
